Variance Application

A Development Variance Permit (DVP) allows a property owner to request an exception to certain land use regulations, such as provisions in the Zoning Bylaw. This type of permit is typically used for minor adjustments or to address site-specific hardships, as long as the proposed change is not significant enough to require rezoning. A DVP cannot be used to alter permitted land use or density.

DVPs are commonly requested to:

  • Adjust setback requirements for features like decks or garages
  • Modify height limits for buildings or structures
  • Permit limited changes to a legally non-conforming structure beyond standard allowances

All Development Variance Permit applications are reviewed by City Council. Once an application is submitted, it is presented at a regular Council meeting, followed by a public notification and comment period. Council then makes the final decision on whether to approve or deny the permit."
