The District of Port Edward is committed to keeping our community safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone. Our Bylaw 519 - Animal Control, sets the rules for responsible pet ownership. Below are some key points every resident should know.
Dogs in Our Community
Licensing
- All dogs over 6 months of age must be licensed each year.
- Licences must be attached to the dog’s collar or harness at all times.
- Discounted rates are available for spayed/neutered dogs.
Dogs “At Large”
A dog is considered “at large” when it is not on itsowner’s property and not under immediate control.
This means dogs must always be:
- On a leash or under immediate control at all times unless on the owner’s property or in a designated off-leash area
- Kept off public places where dogs are prohibited.
Dogs found at large may be impounded by the SPCA.
Picking Up After Your Dog
If your dog defecates on someone else’s property or in a public space, you must remove the waste immediately.
This helps keep our community healthy, safe, and enjoyable for all residents.
Barking and Noise
Dog owners must ensure their pets do not bark, howl, or cry in a way that disturbs the peace of the neighbourhood.
Other Animals
Chickens, Poultry, and Other Small Livestock
Residents of Port Edward are permitted to keep certain small animals such as chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, pigeons, and honeybees. However, there are important rules to follow to ensure they are kept safely, cleanly, and without causing a nuisance to neighbours.
Roosters
Roosters are not permitted anywhere in Port Edward. This rule helps prevent noise issues and disturbances in residential areas.
General Poultry Rules
- Poultry must be housed in secure coops or enclosures.
- Animals should not be allowed to roam freely onto neighbouring properties or public spaces.
Enforcement and Penalties
- Dogs or other animals found in violation of the bylaw may be seized and impounded.
- Owners are responsible for licensing fees, impoundment costs, and any fines.
- Fines for bylaw violations range from $50 up to $10,000.
By working together, we can ensure Port Edward remains a safe, clean, and welcoming community for pets, their owners, and neighbours alike.
